Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen Cream

This formulation was designed to provide broad spectrum (SPF/PFA ≤3) performance. HallBrite® ISO is incorporated to mitigate the photocatalytic and reactive oxygen species generating activities of Titanium Dioxide and to rapidly and efficiently quench the excited states of Avobenzone, protecting it from photodegradation, and so improve sunscreen performance. HallBrite® BHB aids wetting and dispersion of the Titanium Dioxide and contributes to UV filter solubility and enhanced product feel. This formulation was subjected to in vitro analysis and delivered SPF ~26, PFA (PPD) ~10 performance with critical wavelength 379 nm.

PREPARATIVE PROCEDURE

1To a secondary vessel add phase A, start mixing, slowly add phase B and begin heating phase AB to 85°C as phase B disperses.
2When phase B is fully dispersed, add phase C ingredients to phase AB and when fully dispersed add phase D to phase ABC.
3Add the water from phase E to the main vessel, dissolve Disodium EDTA and, with continued mixing, add Xanthan Gum.
4When Xanthan Gum is fully incorporated start heating phase E to 80°C and add premix of phase F to phase E.
5When both phases are homogeneous and at their designated temperatures, slowly add oil phase ABCD to water phase EF with prop mixing.
6Homogenize combined phases for 3 minutes and then return to prop mixing, continuing to cool to room temperature.
7Replace any water lost to evaporation, mix batch until smooth and perform quality assurance checks.
