Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen Lotion

This formulation was designed to provide broad spectrum (SPF/PFA <3) label SPF 20 performance. SolaStay® S1 provides very rapid and efficient excited state quenching of Avobenzone, protecting it from photodegradation. SolaStay® S1 also mitigates the photocatalytic and reactive oxygen species generating activities of the oxide to improve sunscreen performance. HallBrite® BHB contributes to UV filter solubility and enhanced product feel. This formulation was subjected to in vitro analysis and delivered SPF ~23, PFA (PPD) ~8, performance with critical wavelength 378 nm.

PREPARATIVE PROCEDURE

1In secondary vessel add phase A and start mixing. Slowly add phase B to phase A with continued mixing and begin heating to 85°C.
2After TiO2 is dispersed, add phase C ingredients to phase AB with mixing, then add phase D to phase ABC and mix until homogenous.
3Add the water from phase E to the main vessel, dissolve Disodium EDTA with continued mixing and then add Xanthan Gum, stirring until fully incorporated. Start heating phase E to 80°C and add premix of phase F to phase E.
4When both phases are homogeneous and at their designated temperatures, slowly add the oil phase ABCD to the water phase EF with prop mixing. Homogenize for 3 minutes, return to prop mixing and continue to cool and mix until batch is at room temperature.
5Replace any water lost to evaporation, mix batch until smooth and perform quality assurance checks.
